Over the years, we have seen a significant increase in the number of youth visiting our shelter with mental health issues. Finding the resources they need has become one of our biggest challenges. In order to expand our capacity to support these youth and give them what they need to succeed, we have fostered relationships with groups such as New Outlook, a local agency working with individuals with mental health issues.
The Family Reconnect Program, started in 2001, has been a tremendous success. Our Family Reconnect Program works with youth and their families to rebuild relationships following a family breakdown. In some cases, we have been able to get families talking and youth home again within 72 hours of arriving at Eva’s Place. Even if the breakdown is longer term, our staff will work with youth and their families to ensure that the youth do not find themselves lost in the shelter system before they can address their issues. Our Community Support Workers provide advice and access to programs that can assist youth to live independently. With donations from the community and advocacy with landlords, many youth are able to leave Eva’s Place for their own apartments knowing that there’s some furniture at hand and that the cupboards won’t be bare. We hear from returning visitors that this help is really appreciated by youth as they start out on their own.
The safe and compassionate atmosphere of Eva’s Place, combined with the innovative programming, has made us one of the most successful youth shelters in Toronto.
