Intake and Selection of the youth

The engagement process starts with the intake and selection of the youth. Most often, youth are referred to Eva’s Phoenix by other youth-serving organizations, or they may self-refer. Youth applying for a spot with Eva’s Phoenix complete a simple form asking for basic information about their employment, educational and health history, housing status, and other relevant background such as addictions issues.

Eva’s Phoenix is not a shelter, but a transitional program to assist youth who feel they are ready to move into more permanent housing and education/employment. This requires that the youth who participate be at a stage in their lives where they are ready to commit to the program. Eva’s Phoenix wants the youth to be successful with their experience in the program, which is especially important as many of them have experienced failure in many places in their lives – with their schools, in workplaces and with their families. As such, Eva’s Phoenix chooses the youth they think are ready for the program (and who they feel they can realistically support given the resources that they have available) – others are referred to other agencies and encouraged to re-apply when they are ready.

Staff do an initial assessment of the youth during the intake process, at which time they start to work with the youth on the goals described in the Youth Goal-Settling and Case Management Approach section.
