Who Are the Clients of Eva’s Phoenix?
The clients of Eva’s Phoenix share many of the characteristics listed in the previous page. They range in age from 16 to 29 years old, with the average age being 20 years. Slightly over two-thirds are male and almost one-third is female. Most clients share the following profile:
- Living in a shelter
- Unemployed
- Relatively low level of educational attainment
- About half have non-existent or infrequent contact with their families
- Significant number has had contact with the law
- Many have a substance use issue
- Most are referred by another youth-serving agency
Because Eva’s Phoenix is not an emergency shelter, but a transitional program, it is important to note that these youth are typically at a stage where they are ready to commit to participating in a housing and employment program. A detailed intake process including an assessment of each youth’s ability to commit to training and employment, and to co-operative living is conducted.

Successful candidates have met the basic requirements and have shown an ability to engage in the program by demonstrating self-awareness and the ability to solve problems, and by identifying how the program fits with their personal goals. Eva’s Phoenix wants to prepare youth for a successful experience, which is especially important since many of them have experienced many failures in their lives. If the youth are not ready to make the kind of commitment required at Eva’s Phoenix, they are referred to other services in the community and may re-apply when they are ready.
