Although not specifically a provider of housing and employment services, HeartWood was included in these interviews because of its pioneering work on youth engagement, including marginalized youth. HeartWood was established in 1989 as a charitable organization with a focus on youth development. The organization works with over 3,500 youth every year and has a staff of 12.
Vision:
Meaningful youth participation in building healthy communities.
Mission:
To work with youth to develop their skills and confidence as community builders. We train and support adults, young adults and agencies in the skills and tools they require to support meaningful youth participation in building healthy communities.
HeartWood works in four main areas:

Youth Leadership:
HeartWood runs a number of programs and experiences with a focus on leadership development, and community engagement. These include a program for youth in care, Destination: UP, and the Atlantic Youth Leadership Camp.

Research:
HeartWood is a leader in participatory research on issues related to youth participation, and is actively involved in several national research projects. These initiatives include : participation as one of ten core partners in the Centre for Excellence on Youth Engagement, funded by Health Canada; participation in the Model’s program under the National Rural Secretariat; and participation in the Growing Up in Canadian Cities project as one of 5 core partners.

Professional Development:
HeartWood offers interactive training in youth engagement and community youth development for people in youth-serving agencies, governments, schools, community service organizations, senior youth leaders and adult mentors.

Consulting:
HeartWood provides a consulting service to national and provincial organizations and municipal, provincial and federal governments that are interested in exploring practices of youth-inclusion.
HeartWood is being recognized as a potential resource to other organizations in the area of youth engagement and community youth development.
